Pablo Picasso
Born in Málaga in 1881, Picasso co-founded the Cubist movement. His Blue Period ran from 1901 to 1904, and Les Demoiselles d'Avignon dates from 1907.
Jackson Pollock
Pollock placed his canvas on the floor and poured or splashed liquid household paint over it. He said the floor let him work from all four sides and be in the painting.
Action painting
His method became known as action painting, because it used the whole body moving around the canvas. His best-known works were made between 1947 and 1950.
Andy Warhol
Campbell's Soup Cans were 32 canvases, each 20 by 16 inches, painted in 1961 and 1962. They were first shown at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles on 9 July 1962.
The Mona Lisa
Leonardo's oil portrait of Lisa del Giocondo, on a poplar panel measuring 77 by 53 centimetres, was begun by 1503. It has hung in the Louvre since 1797.
